Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell is backing a memorial honouring forces’ sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn, who famously sang morale boosting songs like 'We’ll Meet Again' during World War Two.
The MP joined around 100 colleagues in writing to the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calling on the government to provide funding to complete the memorial.
Caroline said doing so would honour one of the country’s finest and best loved citizens who died in 2020 aged 103.
“Dame Vera was a national treasure much-loved by generations for her important wartime role and for her unstinting charity work in the years following,” said Caroline.
“She was one of the best-known members of the Finest Generation who fought tyranny during the war. Her work entertaining troops all over the world and being the voice of home for so many must not be forgotten.
“I hope the government is able to step up to ensure a fitting memorial to the forces’ sweetheart is finished.”
Dame Vera made an enormous contribution to the country’s morale in the Second World War touring many theatres of operations, including Burma, India and Egypt to entertain troops and boost morale
Post-war she never forgot those servicemen and women and she worked tirelessly in charity work for forces charities, disabled children and breast cancer.
Funds have been raised for the memorial but taxpayers’ money will be needed to complete the project.
The letter to the PM was organised by Dover MP Natalie Elphicke.
