MP Caroline Ansell is urging the town’s council to endorse Gatwick Airport’s development plans for a regular second runway.
At a meeting of the Council tonight, Conservative group leader Councillor Robert Smart will propose a motion to fellow councillors to secure the authority’s support for Gatwick. Support from local government is important when making the case for planning approval.
Caroline and her colleagues said the move would deliver employment opportunities and careers now and in the future, energise the town’s visitor economy and support existing businesses and attract new businesses to our area.
“Out town’s visitor economy will rise or fall based on our transport links and Gatwick is a major economic driver for us. This proposal will add the £1.5 billion to the regional economy and create an additional 18,400 new jobs,“ said Caroline.
“This is something I have raised in Parliament and with Gatwick on a recent visit. I hope the borough council can support this proposal that will do much to help jobs and investment in Eastbourne.”
Conservative group leader Robert Smart added: “The success of Gatwick is vital to our town and a campaign I know our business community very much support.
“I hope the Liberal Democrats will support it too and see it as a sensible motion that has the interests of Eastbourne and the regional economy at its heart.”
