This evening I joined local residents and local councillors Colin Belsey, Penny di Cara and Kshama Shore for the Save Eastbourne Bandstand public meeting.
I understand fully the disappointment of local residents and businesses that the Bandstand will not open this coming summer. It was a joy to be back at the Bandstand last year - ABBA in my case! The fact it will be silent this year is a blow to our hotels and hospitality businesses. As a resort town, we have been hard hit with Covid restrictions. Even last year with restrictions remaining on international travel and no Airbourne the summer season was lacking in its usual splendour.
Now as businesses were looking ahead to a strong recovery this has come as a blow. We heard what a silent Bandstand would mean for local businesses.
I spoke about my work with the Environment Agency who have confirmed that the large scale sea defence work should not prevent the urgent works required for the Bandstand. I also spoke with Ministers who have confirmed potential future streams of funding with guidance being published in the Spring.
However, I was very concerned to hear that the Council has now stated that its inability to borrow - caused by the Government bailout to stave off bankruptcy last year - will also threaten the much needed investment in assets along the entire seafront. The two year delay to the urgent works has already seen costs escalate, and my overriding concern is without urgent attention restoration will become out of reach.
