The Government has earmarked East Sussex to be part of a new pilot to ensure people can be supported to leave hospital quicker.
This is part of ministers’ efforts to tackle pressures on the NHS here in Eastbourne and Willingdon and it is most welcome.
The county is one of six areas involved in ‘Discharge Frontrunner’. The new initiative will see Sussex Health and Care Integrated Care System trialling a new data tool to help services manage performance, give operational oversight and manage demand.
The aim is to free up much needed beds at the DGH and other hospitals and ease pressures. Nationally the Government is also spending up to £200 million to buy short-term care placements to allow people to be discharged safely from hospitals into the community.
More free beds means fewer delays at A&E. I would like to thank all the staff for the work they are doing. I also hope a deal can be reached with nurses, junior doctors and ambulance crews over pay. Ministers and NHS managers want to reach one that is affordable for the country and recognises the tremendous work they undertake.
The Government announced a new bill this week to ensure there is a minimum service level in key services during industrial action.
This sort of legislation is common in many other countries. It does not stop workers from striking – a right that is enshrined in law.
The government is seeking to find the right balance between the right to strike and the right of the public to go about their business and to receive the care they need.
As the Bill goes through parliament, I will look closely at it. If it strikes that balance effectively, it will have my support.
And finally, just a quick reminder I have twice weekly surgeries for constituents to speak to me about matters that concern them and how I can help
These take the shape of a phone call while I am at the House of Commons on Tuesdays and then on Fridays in person at the town hall. If you would like to speak to me please email at [email protected]
I have a busy weekend out and about and please do say hello if you see me. I like nothing better. I met a constituent last night by chance at Victoria Station! He’s moving into his first home today so I’m very much thinking of him packing up in all this rain!
