Across Eastbourne and Willingdon, we are once again preparing for a series of very special Remembrance events. I hope to see many old friends and new as we gather together.
It has always been important to remember that our freedom was bought with the sacrifice of those who have gone before us. This year, with war again in Europe and the loss of life in Ukraine, the cost of conflict has been made very real again. We owe a great debt to those who serve in our armed forces and their families. Our commitment to Remembrance is one way we can show them our appreciation.
Another way is in the important fundraising for veterans that takes place in this season.
This week I took part in a fundraising Poppy Ride in Parliament (static!). My time didn’t win me the Royal British Legion Yellow Jersey but at 1.7 miles in 5 mins, it was respectable enough!
Back at home, I will be in Eastbourne town centre over the weekend poppy selling with my Conservative councillor colleagues and our team. This is the fifth year we have worked with the RBL in this way. Every year, as people give, they share their stories. It is both a moving and humbling experience. It’s also inspiring – Eastbourne is a very generous town.
On Sunday 6th, I have the honour of attending the Eastbourne Remembrance Concert at Our Lady of Ransom with the Eastbourne Silver Band. A Ukrainian Choir will perform this year. This is a free event, so please do join me there.
On Friday 11th there are a number of events. I will be in Hampden Park.
On Remembrance Sunday itself, I have the honour of attending the Eastbourne Remembrance Day Service, Parade and Wreath Laying at the War Memorial. I won’t readily forget the very strange experience of laying a wreath during the pandemic years when we didn’t gather; I was so solitary. It will be good to see the town turn out again this year in great numbers.
Then, later that day, I will be up onto the downs for the Ruthless Memorial Service at Butts Brow with Willingdon & Jevington Parish Council. A lone spitfire flies by. It makes it especially poignant.
