Caroline Ansell has discovered that pornography is freely accessible in the town centre.
In an experiment the local councillor went to three cafes and was able to access obscene material on her smart phone free of charge.
Caroline spoke to the owners of all the cafes who were very concerned about her findings and said they would take immediate action to deny access to the images.
"It was quite a shock for me to be able to go into these places frequented by young people and access pornography," she explained. "There is a major problem nationally with the sexualisation of young people. Happily the owners of the cafes were pretty concerned when I pointed out the issues because they were unaware this access was possible."
"Everyone in the Eastbourne community should be making it as difficult as possible for the images to be available to young people. As a teacher and a mother myself I'm delighted that these cafes have taken action, but I urge all shops and organisations in Eastbourne to make sure they have a robust filter on their Wi-Fi system."
Nick Morris owner of Beanzz Café on Grove Road said, 'I was deeply shocked that pornography could be accessed through our Wi-Fi. I didn't even know it was possible, we thought that this was taken care of by the internet service provider. I am really pleased that Caroline brought this to our attention. Obviously we changed our settings immediately and now these sites are unavailable through our connection. We are a family friendly Wi-Fi space and I hope other businesses will follow our lead. Protecting our young customers is an absolute priority for us."
