This week has been one of loss with the passing of longstanding Meads councillor and my friend Barry Taylor.

Barry was passionate about Eastbourne and a long-serving and faithful public servant but more than any of this, he was a husband, dad and grandad first.

Caroline Ansell invited an Ocklynge Junior School pupil to parliament this week as part of her prize for winning a short story competition.

Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell has been told that illegal misconnections of sewage pipes to surface water drainage continue to be a major source of seawater pollution in the town.

Nominated for his contribution to the community, Don McPhee has been a prolific fundraiser in Eastbourne and has recently celebrated 10 years of fundraising.

Without this army of unsung heroes in our communities and the selfless role they play, the NHS and social care would be sunk without trace. The value of unpaid care – which is priceless – has nonetheless been estimated at £162 billion a year.

The Big Dig is taking place across Eastbourne this summer to reveal more of our town’s beginnings and I’m looking forward to getting involved. Organised by the council’s heritage team and open to all residents and I hope it will find out more about our history.
